The Value of Sail Training

Sea-Change Sailing Trust is a member of The Association of Sail Training Organisations. ASTO  have commissioned researched into the effect of residential sail training voyages on the lives of participants. Group leaders reported the following outcomes with their young people:

  • 93% Sense of achievement,
  • 90% Improved wellbeing and confidence
  • 89% Improved self-control and discipline
  • 88% Increased resilience
  • 91% Improved aspirations and motivation
  • 89% Improved communication skills

Best of all – its also fun! At Sea-Change Sailing Trust it’s also low-carbon, as our Thames sailing barge Blue Mermaid has no engine! We take groups of up to ten young people and two leaders on residential voyages around the East Anglian coast. Contact us today to find out more.

Blue Mermaid – a Film Star!

Sea-Change Sailing Trust is working with film maker Huw Wahl and production assistant Rose Ravetz in the creation of a feature length film exploring the artistry of engineless sailing. For most of history relying on an engine would have been unimaginable, but today almost every sailing boat has an engine and most seafarers don’t countenance leaving harbour without one. Our engineless Thames sailing barge Blue Mermaid will feature in the film, and then after a premiere at The Cutty Sark, Greenwich, in 2024, will take the film on tour to ports around the East Coast, using the hold as a cinema to screen the film at ports visited along the way. Huw and Rose are crowdfunding to buy 16mm film stock  to make this film. Please visit their site Wind, Tide & Oar and give your support to this exciting project.

Discover Your Talents And The Value Of Teamwork

Participating in a residential voyage onboard Blue Mermaid enables our clients to try things they have never done before – to discover their talents and understand the value of teamwork. Someone has to go out along the bowsprit to unwrap the jib each day before we set sail, someone else will climb aloft to unwrap the topsail, and others will be working as a team to wind up the anchor, or handling ropes to control the sails as we set off.  Someone will feel pride in being able to prepare and serve a meal for a whole crew of hungry sailors, and another will be quietly holding the spokes of the wheel and keeping the barge on a steady course.  There is something for everyone. No previous sailing experience necessary. Our three friendly barge staff will help everyone to learn new skills and keep everyone safe.

We are a very low carbon organisation – Blue Mermaid doesn’t have an engine. We do all of this, and much more, using just wind and tide alone!

We have a busy season ahead and  there are just a couple of residential trips still available if you have a group that you think would benefit from a residential voyage with us. Please contact us for more information.

Hoorah! We Are Under Sail Again After The Winter Refit!

We have our first trainees of the season. They are a little older than our usual customers! We are addressing the skills shortage in the historic Thames sailing barge fleet. This is a PLA funded barge crew training week. Our trainee skippers are kept busy on a passage down The Wallet. Oli is steering, Jake polishing the binnacle and Chris swinging the lead. There’s never a dull moment at sea!

We are looking forward to sailing with our friends from Inclusion Ventures in Jaywick next week. Please bring the sun with you!

The 2022 Sailing Season is Almost Here!

We are looking forward to seeing some of our old friends again this year as our regular groups return to us after the Covid-enforced break, together with some new groups who are excited to have their first sail on board our lovely engineless Thames sailing barge Blue Mermaid.  In addition to our youth voyages Blue Mermaid will be racing in the Thames barge matches, training people in maritime heritage skills, and hopefully also carrying some cargo under sail.

It takes the support of many to keep Sea-Change Sailing Trust going. You can now ‘Meet the Team’ in the ‘Find Out More’ section of this website, but along with the ‘front-of-house team’, there is also a hidden army of supporters that we are very grateful to.  There are trustees and patrons, shipwrights, riggers, and sailmakers, and all those who support the charity financially. Our thanks to you all – you play such an important role in enabling people of all ages to benefit from the learning that takes place on a voyage with us.
